IGNOU plans courses for sex workers

July 11, 2014

Aligarh : The regional office of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has proposed special study centres for sex workers in western Uttar Pradesh. A proposal is being sent to Delhi. The university was established with the aim of serving those deprived of conventional education, and such a programme would cater to precisely that category. Earlier, IGNOU has reached out to jail inmates and rural students.

Among the biggest hurdles in such a programme, though, would be the disinterest many sex workers show to education.

A sex worker born and brought up in Madar Gate, Aligarh's infamous red light area, said, "Why make such plans for us? We are not doing anything criminal. Our work is khandani, our mothers were in the same line. We think there is nothing wrong in what we do. We get medical check-ups frequently, our kids go to school and we live with freedom. If there is anything government institutions can do for us, then it is ensure a better life for our children."
